Social and physical distancing and restrictions on international travel have been introduced to reduce the risk of acquiring or spreading infection with COVID-19 in various community settings. Whilst the risk of infection to COVID-19 decreases, social and movement measures exacerbate the economic slowdown and can worsen socioeconomic inequalities and (mental) health. In this type of context, there is no right or wrong answer and no one-size-fits-all strategy. The World Health Organization and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development describe, in their joint publication, a decision framework to assist countries as they continue to calibrate social and movement measures until there is widespread population coverage with the vaccine.

RIVM (Dutch Institute for Public Health and Environment) and EuroHealthNet, January 2021

This report describes how the coronavirus will eventually change public health forcing us to take different measures to prepare for the future. The results of this foresight study paint a picture of a society that has been hit hard at all levels by the coronavirus pandemic. Being better prepared for the future calls for:

  • More insight into mental health. Better information and knowledge about mental health among different population groups affected by the corona crisis are needed to develop appropriate policies – and to offer future prospects to the people covered by those policies.

  • Greater commitment to integrated prevention.

  • Consideration of chronic illnesses as well as infectious diseases.

  • More intensive cross-domain cooperation between ministries to improve health.
